Desperate Grieving

i know i have more important things to do, but i just want to point out the gossip that ABC had to quickly dub a line to last week's Desperate Housewives in light of the pope's death. Bree says:

he's not buying it, though...

it did have a big impact on me, though.... as hard as it is for me to entertain the idea that i find meaning in films targeted at pubescent girls....

(ok, really, it's not that hard)

think about Mean Girls.... it had a huge (at least gay) following, and I think there's an underlying reason...

these dramas are reintroducing the traumas and aspirations that have made me the messed up man i am today....

not to mention, reinforcing the uncomfortably questionable axiom that the intelligent but outcast will ultimately find redemption for their awkwardness and pain.

Angles in America

I've been watching the mini-series this week....

wow. really, i'm stunned. it's rich. i want to read the script alone. i love the pill popping wife who "moves to antarctica". :-)

Jay and I went to see it at Paramount today. I found it kind of.... deep.

July 16: Touch of Pink, Ian Iqbal Rashid. A gay Indian young Londoner (Jimi Mistry) who takes guidance from the spirit of Cary Grant (Kyle MacLachlan) is brought back to Canada by his mother to be married to a nice Muslim girl.

Mean Girls

On Dr. Phil today, he spent the whole show with eight high school girls engaged in an incredibly immature popularity battle between two factions. I was surprised at just how petty, incommunicative, insensitive, and just all-over fucked up they were.... the show was, in some ways, a promotion for the movie that's coming out next week.

In the end, with his little southern drawl (i've told a few people I thought Dr. Phil was kinda hot, and their first reaction is "ew gross", and then they think about it for five seconds longer, and they end up agreeing with me) he sums it all up with "part of growing up is being accountable for what you do, and realizing you can and do cause other people pain"

The Apprentice

Even though I have an exam at 9am, and I knew I'd be up all night (I'm at the library now), I sort of planned it into my day that I'd watch the finale to The Apprentice.

I was starting to get frustrated, because it didn't seem all that "live", as the show was being promoted. If you didn't see it, here's the deal: in the last fifteen minutes, Trump said "You're Hired" to one of the candidates, and all of a sudden the walls of the "board room" where mechanically dismantled to reveal a studio audience full of the losing candidates, family members, etc.

It was a smart idea, but it could have been executed better... it probably seemed more spectacular in theory than it actually turned out on TV.

Worse, Donald Trump was absolutely pathetic with the teleprompter. Throughout the show he seemed tremendously at ease... his ego was charming. But in this live segment, he was frigid, and possibly... nervous? It was cute though, that they put a camera in the Chrysler Crossfire the winner received, for a quick, closing shot of the happy guy zooming away.
